Jesus Christ Superstar (1973) Pilate’s Dream (9)

Edited for YouTube: By request from the 1973 production: Pilate's Dream.I edited this video in full screen for effect. There is nothing wrong with the video.~Ric~ Lyrics: PILATE I dreamed I met a Galilean; A most amazing man. He had that look you very rarely find: The haunting, hunted kind. I asked him to say what had happened, How it all began. I asked again, he never said a word. As if he hadn't heard. And next, the room was full of wild and angry men. They seemed to hate this man. They fell on him, and then Disappeared again. Then I saw thousands of millions Crying for this man. And then I heard them mentioning my name, And leaving me the blame.

Why is it the comment boards for every segment of this movie all break down into theological arguments? Give it a break, people!

  3. Taloon64 Says:

This isn’t about pilates at all, lol. My bad…

you need to realize, though, that faith without some sort of logical base is asinine. i have gone to a christian school for years and i know that you need faith but u need faith and knowledge. u cant just say, “i believe in God and nothing u can say will ever even make me think about it.

I think it shows that every single figure in this story has an important part for the realization of Jesus death and the writting of Gods story. Whenever they want to or not. So for Judas or Pilate. Neither of them had a chance to decide it differently. They were part of Gods plan. And this part shows the suffering of Pilate by the realization of his personal function. First he just tell a dream he had. Later (at the end), he sees how powerless he really is.

  6. BKEL12346 Says:

According to the scriptures, it was actually Pilates wife who had the dream. She told Pilate Jesue would be his downfall.

  7. loveheartsxxx Says:

Pilate doesn’t want to be blamed for the conviction of Jesus, hence why he ‘washes his hands of him’ and sends him back to Herod.

Okay, just for you everyone will stop thinking. Thanks, we were in danger of getting smarter there for a moment through debate and reasoned interaction.

That point is negated by the fact that we’re talking via ******* youtube comments.

Striking. I love his clear british accent.

500 CHARACTER paragraphs, big difference. The limit sometimes can be very frustrating.

  16. UglySean Says:

It was so awesome when Barry Dennen answered my email. That really rocked. One of my all time favourite fillains.

  17. yamihoole Says:

Well partly if you wanna think of it that way. He spent a lot of time living in London, so he may still have like a half-accent but he is American. He was born in Chicago I believe

  18. DarrenFranklin Says:

    what is this man called?

  19. gamgsb Says:

I believe he is British. A lot of these people came from live theater and continued to do live theater after the movie came out. You wouldn’t see them unless you went to a lot of Broadway shows.

  20. vlunney Says:

that’s Pontius Pilate the roman appointed governor of Palestine. Herod had no real power but he ran things on the jewish side so long as they stayed under control and paid their taxes to Rome.

  21. Carlozandre Says:

He plays Mendel, one of the secondary jewish characthers in the village. Mendel is the man in the marriage party scene who comments, outraged, that the student Perchik cross the line between men and women and takes one of the milkman daughters to dance.

  22. Kaffyboy Says:

Barry Dennen is a good friend of mine, and he is a lovely man. I’ll pass on your good thoughts.

  23. dismunk Says:

Jesus was a carpenter Heeb; Pontius Pilate was a governor.

  24. leigh50766 Says:

    magical

  25. kncybul Says:

To dismunk: Bill Clinton was a governor. Ronald Reagan was a governor.

    the rabbis son – with a h u g e beard

  27. Elvamp Says:

His English is perfect, each syllable is pronounced carefully and beautifully. And he is so emotional and so different in each of his scenes. It’s a shame he hasn’t many parts in other films.

  28. ShinjitsuNoIta Says:

Can you tell me who he was in Fiddler on the Roof??? I can’t believe I’m so dense I never noticed he was in it, lol… To my credit, I did realize Ted Neely was the antagonist in Of Mice and Men; that was slightly odd to watch… I think he’s the best ‘Jesus’ for this musical, so I can’t see him as anything else! :D I hope Dennen’s role was good-natured…

  29. Kolkraqr9 Says:

Barry Dennen was still Pilate whenI was JCS @ the Mark Hellinger in April 1973.

  30. MrCarlosUSA Says:

Was Barry Dennen, in the original 1971 Broadway cast? When the musical first debuted in the Mark Hellinger Theater.

  31. cheesycubes Says:

omg… omg… that would be AMAZING!!! omg… you my good friend are pure GENIUS!!

  32. Zeeboe Says:

Anybody think Gerald Butler would be good as Pontius Pilate? You take his look and attitude from 300 and throw his singing voice from the 2005 Phantom of the Opera remake while singing Jesus Christ Superstar songs and I think you have probably the best Pontius Pilate ever. Just picture him singing Pilate’s Dream. I get goosebumps just thinking about it.

  33. WickedHalo3 Says:

    …it..was.

  34. jacnar Says:

why wasn’t this in the 2000 version?

  35. PTCello Says:

The accompaniment is different in this than in the original movie. it’s bey wrong for this song. Much too lively. It should be much slower and gentler… Pilate is confused, wondering… the instruments should reflect that… (BTW, In the Bible, it was Pilate’s Wife who had the dream)

  36. RicBNH Says:

The primary actors from the 1971 broadway cast were:

    Jeff Fenholt-Jesus of Nazareth
    Yvonne Elliman-Mary Magdalene
    Ben Vereen-Judas Iscariot
    Paul Ainsley-King Herod
    Bob Bingham-Caiaphas
    Barry Dennen-Pontius Pilate
    Dennis Buckley-Simon Zealotes
    Michael Jason-Peter
    Phil Jethro-Annas
